Alien invaders!

Posted by Todd Koenig on Thursday, April 4, 2013, In : Invasive species

Don't let this alien invader (Zebra Mussel) into your favorite lake this summer.  Artwork by author's 8 year old daughter.

Time is nearing when our boats will replace the ice on our favorite lakes and there will be an influx of campers heading to their favorite locations. All this activity increases the chances of transferring alien invaders (invasive species) from one location to another.  We need to be vigilant in our role of protecting our beloved lakes and forests.

The DNR has been ...

Recipes: Thai venison lettuce wraps

Posted by Todd Koenig on Thursday, March 14, 2013, In : Game recipes

These venison lettuce wraps rival any lettuce wraps found at all the popular restaurants.

You will need approximately a 1 1/2 pound venison roast.

Slice the roast thinly when it is partially frozen to get uniform slices.  Cut the roast roughly to these dimensions: ~1/4" thick x 1/2" wide x 2" long strips.

Marinade the meat in a resealable bag with the following ingredients:
1/2 cup soy sauce
1/2 cup Lawry's - Sesame Ginger Marinade
3 Tbsps white wine vinegar
1 Tsp sesame oil (Oli...

Bowhunting: What to do during the "off" season, Part 4

Posted by Todd Koenig on Tuesday, February 26, 2013, In : Bow Hunting
So far, in my Bowhunting: What To Do During the "Off" Season articles, I have discussed alternative hunt opportunities, shooting in your house, and joining a league. Each of these activities allows the archer to work on different skill sets yet all maintain or increase muscle memory and generally increase the comfort with your equipment. It is now time to find some hunting options again and what better way to do this than add a hunt to a vacation you are all ready planning. If you are no...

Recipes: Herb grilled salmon/trout

Posted by Todd Koenig on Wednesday, January 30, 2013, In : Game recipes
Now that the trout season is underway throughout the whole state,  I will share my absolute favorite herb grilled baste. It was originally intended for grilled salmon fillets, but I have used it with trout and dense fleshed ocean fish with equal success.

You will want to leave the skin on the fillets for this delicious treat.  Squeeze lemon juice onto the meat side of the raw fish.  Refrigerate the fillets to keep them cold.  Prepare this mixture for each pound of fish you plan...

Bowhunting: What To Do During the "Off" Season - Part 3

Posted by Todd Koenig on Wednesday, January 2, 2013, In : Bow Hunting
In my previous two "Bowhunting: What To Do In the Off Seasons" articles, I first discussed alternative hunting opportunities for bowhunters around the country.  The main options again are small game, varmints, and predators, all of which offer a bowhunter challenging hunts at near nothing costs.  In the second article, I gave you some options for shooting at home.  Both allow the bowhunter to work on their form, maintain or increase muscle memory, and practice precision shot placement.

Bowhunting: What To Do During the "Off" Season - Part 2

Posted by Todd Koenig on Monday, December 17, 2012, In : Bow Hunting
In Part I of my previous article, I shared ideas for extending your hunting opportunity beyond the deer season.  Extending your hunting season is great, but it may not be for everyone. You may have no interest in pursuing small game, don't have the time to travel, or don't what to spend additional money by heading out of state.  While extending your hunting season on small game, varmints, and predators will improve your hunting skills and increase your practice time, your skills can be...

Recipes - Thick and creamy venison chili

Posted by Todd Koenig on Tuesday, December 4, 2012, In : Game recipes
This flavorful, thick and creamy chili not only satisfies your belly, it offers the surprise hint of cinnamon that excites your senses and leaves you wanting more.

~ 1 lb cooked venison roast - after cooking dice into 1/2 inch cubes  (You may grill, bake, boil, or roast it.  My favorite is grilled.  Whatever method you chose, cook on a low temperature for a longer period of time.  The meat will be sauteed and simmered again, so even if it is rarer than you prefer, it will end up ...

Bowhunting - What to do with the "offseason," Part I

Posted by Todd Koenig on Thursday, November 29, 2012, In : Bow Hunting
As deer season draws to an end, many bowhunters are left with an empty feeling and dreams of the following year's hunt.  I wish next year would be here as well and while it would be nice to fast-forward the off season, it is not an option in the foreseeable future.  Now is the time to make those adjustments and perfect your performance.  The worst thing you can do is put your bow away.  What you do right now, will build the foundation for next year's hunting success.

During this five p...

My tips from the field - naturally attract deer

Posted by Todd Koenig on Wednesday, October 31, 2012, In : Deer Hunting
Naturally attract deer? How, you ask?  Disturbed Dirt!

Disturbance made at ~4:00 pm, no scent.  10/13/09
This idea came to fruition after working at many different construction sites.  The morning after any earth related disturbance I observed a high amount of deer tracks in the soil.  They would show up overnight after we had gone home from the job site.  From the appearance and direction of the tracks, they were there for no other purpose than to check out the newly excavated so...

Extra deer? Donate them to the Food Shelf

Posted by Todd Koenig on Thursday, October 25, 2012, In : Deer Hunting

Don't forget to donate to the Minnesota Venison Donation program!

There are two simple methods of going about this.  One, make a nominal financial donation of $1, $3, or $5 anywhere you purchase your hunting or fishing licenses.  Or, more importantly, donate one or more of the deer that you harvest, at no cost to you, to one of the state approved meat processors located throughout the state.

MN Approved Meat Processors for 2012

This program started back in 2004 as an ad...

Todd Koenig I have always had a great love for the outdoors. In fact, I can’t remember a time that I wasn’t hunting, fishing, trapping, or exploring the wilderness. From an early age, I enjoyed bringing my camera along for the perfect wildlife shot and putting those photograph’s together into a story. Having a degree in Biology and teaching a variety of science classes, sharing my outdoor knowledge comes very naturally to me. With encouragement from my family and friends, I now plan to pursue my passion for the outdoors with you! I hope that you enjoy the experience as much as I do. I live in central Minnesota with my wife and two young daughters, and yellow lab.
